Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple Guide 2025 – History, Timings & Travel Tips

Located in Verul village near Ellora in Maharashtra, Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga is the 12th and final Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. This temple is a sacred pilgrimage site for devotees across India and holds deep spiritual and historical importance. It’s also situated just 1 km from the famous Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.


Significance of Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga

Grishneshwar, meaning ‘Lord of Compassion’, is where Lord Shiva is believed to have appeared to a devoted woman named Ghushma. This divine manifestation marks the site as one of the holiest of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is also mentioned in the Shiva Purana.

Entry Fee & Dress Code

For Men:

  • Mandatory bare-chested entry into the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) — shirts and vests are not allowed inside the inner sanctum 

  • Recommended attire: Dhoti or pajama, preferably saffron- or yellow-colored

  • Trousers are acceptable for outer areas, but men must go bare-chested upon entering the sanctum

For Women:

  • Preferred traditional Indian wear: Saree, Chudidar with dupatta, or Punjabi suit (salwar kameez)

  • Not allowed: Shorts, sleeveless tops, mini-skirts, low-waist jeans, or revealing/Western wear
